Caravaggio johntspike 9780789210593 Books

I first purchased John T. Spike's "Fra Angelico" some years ago. Both these books are large-sized format - 11 1/2" X 9" - with extraordinary illustrations. The text is lively, and the notes at the end hint at some of the controversies or differences of opinion among experts in the field; these might have bogged down the flow of the actual text.

"Caravaggio" follows the artist's career chronologically. His career trajectory of incredibly rapid soaring excellence, often cutting the edge of propriety a little to close for such dangerous times under a sometimes powerful reactionary Vatican and/or regimen of censorship under the Inquisition, and his sometimes shocking personal tendencies toward self-destructive behavior is all laid out in clear, exciting prose. In this revised 2nd edtion, his analysis of the paintings includes the very interesting theories of David Hockney in regards use of the latest scientific optical aids of the time to assist in the extraordinarily natural portrayals of the individual people in Caravaggio's paintings. Galileo was an exact contemporary of Caravaggio, and for some time they actually had the same patron and lived in the same palace; it can't be documented, but perhaps they even met on occasion. Galileo was very interested in the "art of science" as well as the impact of "science on art". But more importantly, Mr. Spike explains how some of the latest scientific developments of the age influenced the artist's painting. I strongly recommend "Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane" by Andrew Graham-Dixon to delve more deeply into the details of the artist's life.

Caravaggio johntspike 9780789210593 Books Reviews

There are many books devoted to the life and work of Caravaggio and it helps to have several reference books in the library of those fascinated by art history and the immeasurable impact Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio made and continues to make on the art world. This huge and heavy book is the Second Revised Edition (the first being published in 2001) and the only significant differences are the inclusion of a second Introduction and the polishing of some of the information that was in the original.

John T. Spike is an art historian form Harvard who has published books on the Florentine Renaissance, most successfully with `Masaccio' and `Fra Angelica'. Spike lives in Florence, Ital now and continues to research all the hidden corners of Italian art. The book includes a comprehensive catalogue of the works of the Caravaggio in CD format in the back panel of the book - a bit of one upsmanship that makes this expensive book worth the price.

But the most impressive aspect of this particular volume is the manner in which Spike presents the material. Everything is in chronological order, a technique that allows the reader/viewer to appreciate the growth both artistically and socio-politically. The color plates are vividly accurate and another fine aspect of this volume is the number of cropped details that accompany the full painting - far more than any other book on the artist.

In all this is a comprehensive, well-documented volume from Abbeville Press, and 's price listing makes it affordable. Grady Harp, October 13
Great book!
This lovely book was given as a gift to an aspiring artist and he absolutely loves it!
It is a complete review of Caravaggio's work with beautiful illustrations and a very accurate biography. It is an extremely scholarly work, but also very easy to read. If you love Caravaggio's paintings this is a MUST to own!
Fantastic book and painter.
